Adult Education
The Discipline for Adult Education is part of the School of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal. It is based on the Golf Road campus in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg.
The primary focus of the discipline has been on adult basic education, community education and development, and continuing education, including non-formal and formal courses, research, policy development, and the development of materials to support adult learning. Recent years have seen consolidation of the formal courses offered, although two new programmes – the Advanced Diploma in Education (TVET), and the Advanced Diploma in Education (Adult and Community Education) are currently under development.
Two projects run by the discipline, Learn with Echo and New Readers’ Publishers, are no longer operational. However, many of the resources created by these projects are available online via the links in the left hand margin.
The discipline continues to run a number of community engagement projects, including the Paulo Freire project, the Peace Education project, and the Community Education project (please see links). Staff are also involved in various research projects.
